Smoke Coming Out of My Camera Bag
January 23rd, 2009 | Photography TipsThis is not a joke. It happened this morning when I opened my bag right before a family portrait session. “There’s smoke,” said Melvin. My brand new Bronic video light was accidentally turned on while it being was transported inside the camera bag. A unit of SB-800 placed next to it was melted from the heat. I am glad that was the only damage to this little accident.
Fellow photographers, never transport tungsten lights with the power/battery attached. I have learned my lessons today.

ouchhh! was that with one or both lights on?

Don’t remember whether one or both lights were on. I was in panic mode! Don’t think accident is covered by warranty.

Ouch, I use the same video light as well (borrowed from Grace). I must remember to leave the battery disconnected from it.

hahahahaha that exact samething happened to me just on a year ago! I was doing family shots when some guests came up and asked if I had dry ice in one of my camera bags! My vid light was stuck in the on position and started melting the foam in the bag and also melted a speedlight, like yours. Could have been a lot more dangerous if it was in a car at the time!

Brother, never ever put batteries in any continuous light. Especially the ones that is hot. Even if it was a LED light…its best to leave the AA battery out. It would drain the battery and you wont be able to use the light. Luckily you were not on a flight else it would really raise an alarm.
Even with AA batteries, always put em in the case. I once just put em together with my keys. It formed a circuit with the keys connecting em. Thus the airport x-ray scanners detected heat while it went thru.

If the flash is working , then fine. Warranty does not cover human damage. Normally to get it done would be cheap by local mechanic ( if its over warranty period )
Tungsten light is hot. Switch if ON for continuous period will cause explosion or burn. Just be careful next time.
My buddy has one set of this Bronic light ( useful though ) but its hot. You cant touch the front part when it’s on. Painful as i’m one of the ex-victim haha.
By the way , wish Mr. Louis and family a very happy chinese new year and remember a big limited edition Hong Bao for me can d ….
