She is a property powerhouse, mother of four, an admirable street smart entrepreneur and a very beautiful woman. Not often you find all these qualities in one person. She is the one and only Datuk Susan Wong. The chairperson of Sabah Housing & Real Estate Developers Association (SHAREDA), Susan is no stranger to cameras and media.
The Peak magazine was in Kota Kinabalu working on a cover story of Susan and they called me to work on the photography. You can’t say no to such an assignment. In fact, any calls that take me away from wedding and pre-wedding gigs are most welcomed. Just love a fresh challenge.
The challenge of photographing Susan is her beauty. Her beauty radiates so brightly that it may blind you to her intelligence, achievements and position. I can imagine how hard it is for a beautiful woman to be taken seriously in a field dominated by men. Was told that some women have to be more “man” than their male counterpart to prove their worthiness. That was not where we were heading with the cover photo.
We want a picture of Susan that speaks of her who she is: a corporate leader, shrewd businesswoman, graceful mother, and some say, a beautiful queen of property. We couldn’t find her a throne, but on this red chair, she looks like a queen no less. Big thanks to Hala, art director of The Peak. What a blessing to work with someone with a clear vision and creativity.
We worked on a few more concepts so that we have a collection of pictures to support the rest of the story. A few people have asked me privately, “Louis, is Susan as beautiful in person?”
“She is more beautiful in person,” I replied.
I hope our shoot did her justice.
