In Front of the Camera: Michael

July 9th, 2012 | Personal, Portraits

We are starting a series of posts to feature people who stood in front of our cameras. They will share their experience of being photographed by us. It’s always something we want to find out. What was going through their minds when the camera is pointed their direction? Read on…

Tawau-born Michael Hiew is one of the organisers of the recently-concluded Property Investment & Home Expo (PIHeX) 2012 held in 1Borneo Hypermall in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia. His lovely parents, who now live in Perth, Australia, flew in just to help him during the expo.

“This is the first PIHeX so as an organiser, it’s quite nerve-wreaking. I didn’t know what to expect. But I’m glad to say that exhibitors have achieved record sales here and that developers had told us that they had fun. They said that having the Louis Pang Photography booth at the expo was extraordinary. You all attracted a lot of attention. We’re already planning for the next PIHeX!” said Michael.

Why did you sign up for the shoot with Louis Pang Photography during PIHeX 2012?
A free portrait by Louis Pang is not something that happens often. I decided to ask Louis if he minded taking a family portrait for me and my parents because the last time that happened was 15 years ago!

Do you have any prior experience being photographed? If you do, can you tell me about it?
Yes, we have had our family portraits taken in various studios in Perth but that’s a long time ago. The last time was about 15 years ago. The experience? I remember it was like taking passport photos, you know? Formal.

I enjoyed this shoot because Louis interacted with us before and during the shoot. More like having a friend take my photos. The smiles on our faces were genuine smiles.

Do you have any concerns about having your picture taken?
Not if I trust the photographer.

When you stepped onto the set with Louis, what was going through your mind?
I watched Louis work on this set for two days before I came to take my portrait. I knew what was coming. I knew I just had to relax and let Louis guide us.
